lab M6 L19 Flashcards
1
Q
ovarian cycle
A
predictable changes in female’s oocytes and ovarian follicles that can be correlated with menstrual cycle
2
Q
what two processes does the ovarian cycle include?
A
oogenesis (production of female gametes)
folliculogenesis (growth and development of ovarian follicles)
3
Q
oogenesis steps
A
- oogonium (ovarian stem cell) divides via mitosis and makes two identical primary oocytes (2n)
- initiation of ovulation releases oocyte from ovary and LH hormone has been released to initiate meiosis; meiosis makes one secondary oocyte and one first polar body
- secondary oocyte undergoes meiosis to make one mature ovum and one second polar body; only happens if sperm succeeds in penetrating barriers
4
Q
what are ovarian follicles?
A
oocytes and their supporting cells
5
Q
folliculogenesis
A
growth and development of ovarian follicles, which typically leads to ovulation of one follicle
6
Q
folliculogenesis steps
A
- primordial follicles present in newborn females
- puberty occurs and primordial follicles gradually become growing follicles called primary follicles
- granulose layer divides and primary become secondary follicles
- tertiary follicles have fully formed antrum and are larger
