lab M6 L18 Flashcards
1
Q
where does spermatogenesis occur?
A
seminiferous tubules of testes
2
Q
spermatogenesis steps
A
- spermatogonium (stem cells) goes through mitosis (2n)
- division of spermatogonium makes two identical primary spermatocytes (2n)
- one primary spermatocyte undergoes meiosis and makes two diverse secondary spermatocytes (1n)
- the two secondary spermatocytes undergo meiosis and make four diverse spermatids (1n)
3
Q
spermiogensis
A
transforms early spermatids from spermatogenesis into mature sperm (spermatozoa)
4
Q
Leydig cell location
A
between seminiferous tubules of testes
5
Q
Leydig cell function
A
produce testosterone
GnRH (hypothalamus) -> luteinizing hormone (pituitary) -> testosterone (Leydig cells)
6
Q
Sertoli cell location
A
seminiferous tubules
7
Q
Sertoli cells function
A
promote spermatogenesis
produce inhibin hormone to inhibit FSH release from pituitary, reducing testosterone secretion
GnRH (hypothalamus) -> follicle-stimulating hormone (pituitary) -> inhibins (Sertoli cells)
