Lab Five Flashcards
What is Osmosis?
The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is a hypotonic environment?
When the environment has a low solute concentration relative to the cell.
What is a hypertonic environment?
When the environment has a high solute concentration relative to the cell.
What is an isotonic environment?
When there is equal water and solute concentration on either side and there is no net movement of water.
What is Osmoregulation?
The regulation of water and ion concentration within the body.
What is Semipermeable?
When the membrane restricts at least one kind of solute, but not water. Water is a relatively small molecule that has high kinetic energy.
What are Osmoregulators?
Animals that maintain body solute concentration different from the environment, including all freshwater animals. They are usually hyperosmotic, and faced with weigh gains and losses depending on the environment.
What are Osmoconformers?
Animals that do not maintain their osmotic concentrations different from their environment.
What are the two problems for land invertebrates and osmoregulation?
- Salts have to be consumed and are not readily available
2. Water must be obtained and preserved
How is excretion and osmoregulation accomplished in annelids?
By a highly developed organ system called metanephridia.
What are sheep blood cells called?
Erythrocytes.
Blood plasma is ____ relative to the cytoplasm of red blood cells.
Isotonic.
