Lab Eight Flashcards
Define Metabolism
The sum of all the chemical reactions that can occur in an organism; both catabolic and anabolic in nature. Begins with life, ends with death; thousands of metabolic reactions occur to keep cells healthy and working.
What is a Catabolic Reaction?
Destructive; large organic molecules are broken down into smaller molecules; usually releases ATP/energy.
What is an Anabolic Reaction?
Constructive; small precursor molecules are assembled into larger molecules; requires an input of energy/ATP.
What is Metabolic Rate?
The amount of energy used by an animal within a specific period of time.
What does the maintenance of Metabolic Rate require?
A steady stream of energy to meet fluctuating demands.
