Lab: Experiment 1 Flashcards
Describe:
Hydrate
A hydrated compound, has a specific number of water molecules associated with it, as part of the crystal structure
Describe:
Anhydrous
Has no water molecules
Define:
Density
The relationship between mass and volume
Give the formula and units for density
Density = Mass/Volume
Usually measured in grams per milliliter (solids and liquids)
Usually measured in grams per liter (gas)
What affects the density of a substance?
Temperature and pressure
Density of a solid or liquid may change significantly with temperature, but very little with pressure
Density of a gas varies greatly with both temperature and pressure
Formula for mass percent of water removed from a hydrated salt
Mass of water removed / Initial mass of sample * 100
Formula for mass of water removed
Initial mass of sample - Final mass of sample
