Lab Exam 1 Flashcards
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Function: Allows for efficient diffusion and filtration in sites where protection is not important and secretes lubricating substances in serosae
Location: Lungs
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Function: Secretion and Absorption
Location: Kidneys
Features: Blank space is called lumen
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Function: Secretion and Absorption
Location: Thyroid
Simple Columnal Epithelium
Function: Epithelium allows for absorbtion of nutrients
Location: Intestines
Features: Contains villi, which are finger projections that help to break down complex nutrients to help absorbtion and goblet cells, that produce mucous to prevent debris from attaching to the outside
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Function: Protects underlying tissues in areas subject to abrasion
Location: Esophagus
Features: Only squamous at apical surface
Pseudostratified Epithelium
Function: Secretes substances such as mucus
Location: Trachea
Features: Goblet cells are the rounded lighter stained cells, cilia are the hair like extensions that appear as a fuzzy edge
Transitional Epithelium
Function: stretches readily, permits stored urine to distend the urinary organ
Location: Bladder
(Connective Tissue)
Areolar Connective Tissue
Function: attaches the epithelium to the underlying tissues for diffusion of nutrients
Location:
Features: Collagen fibers (thicker, darker), Elastic fiber (thinner, lighter), Fibroblasts (cell), Ground substance (everything in between)
Connective Tissue
Adipose Connective Tissue
Function: Stores and releases energy
Location: Fat
Features: Adipocyte (cell), lipid (unstained surface), matrix (outside the cell between fibers
