Lab Equipment Flashcards
Used primarily for the initial direct identification of bacteria based kn gram stain characteristic, as well as their morphological features.
Microscope
Commonly used in clinicak and teaching laboratories that usually magnifies ab object up to 1000x diameters
Brightfield microscope/light
(Produce dark image in light background)
Permits one to see internal details such as nucleus, cytoasn & granulrd of unicellular organisms.
Phase contrast microscope
Utilizes ultra violet light, fluorescent dyes & on occasion antibody molecules. The microbial specimen being observed appears to glow in the dark
Fluorescent microscope
Uses a beam of electrons as its source of energy that detects very tiny objects such as viruses or molecules.
Electron microscope
2 types of electron microscope
Scanning
Tunneling?/transmission
devise use to sterilize equipment and supplies by subjecting them to specified temperature, pressure and time• it is the pre-disposal treatment and sterilization of waste material
Autoclave
devise use to grow and maintain microbiological culture or cell culture and maintains optimal temperature and other conditions such as CO2 and O2 content of the atmosphere
Incubator
• enclosed, ventilated laboratory workplace for safety working with materials contaminated with pathogens requiring a defined biosafety level• use to protect the laboratory worker and the surroundings
BIOSAFETY CABINET (B(BSC)C)
Types of bsc
Class 1
Class 2a1, 2a2, 2b1, 2b2, 2c1?
Class 3
used to count colonies of bacteria or other microorganisms growing on an agar plate
Colony counter
use for the accurate weighing of samples, media, chemicals and precipitates• use to measure mass with high degree of precision
Analytical balance
are made of plastic or glass used to hold media and grow bacteria for study.• Use to hold small objects for observation• Used in the evaporation and drying of samples
Petri dish
are hand-held and compact appliances that introduce microorganisms like bacteria or yeast into plated or tubed growth media before incubation, multiplication, or growth
Inoculating loop/wire
Types of Inoculating Loops/Needles
- Calibrated loop - 1ul, 10ul
- Non-calibrated loop
- Reusable (Wire) needle
- Disposable needle
