Lab Diagnostics CBC Flashcards
Neutrophils
Phagocytizes primarily bacteria, 40-70%
Eosinophil
Phagocytizes and destroys antigen-antibody complexes. 1-4%
Basophil
Releases histamines (allergic reactions), 0-1%
Lymphocyte
B type produces antibodies in blood and lymph; T type kills virus containing cells, 20-45%
Monocyte
Becomes macrophage when stimulated, phagocytizes bacteria and viruses, 4-8%
What is a band cell?
An immature neutrophil
What is a left shift?
Infections with a predominance of immature neutrophils
Hematocrit
Indirectly measures the RBC mass (% of packed RBCs by mass)
Mean corpuscular volume (MCV)
Determines the size of the red blood cells
Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH)
Quantifies the amount of hemoglobin per red blood cell
Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC)
Indicates the amount of hemoglobin by unit volume
Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW)
Represents the quantification of the variation in the size of red blood cells
Smallest formed elements in the blood?
Platelets (thrombocytes)
Used as a screening tool for hypercoagulability.
D-dimer
Blood test that includes Cl, Na, K, CO2 glucose, BUN, creatinine
Basic metabolic panel (BMP)
