Dermatological Disorders Flashcards
A well demarcated erythematous plaque with silvery scales
Psoriasis
Blossoming of red/pink/brown scaly patches at trunk and proximal extremities with Christmas tree distribution
Pityriasis Rosea
Pruritic flat topped violaceous papules
Lichen Planus
Chronic pruritic eczematous eruption
Affects all age groups but very common in childhood, requires moisturization
Atopic dermatitis
Inflammatory reaction of the skin to some external stimulus
Contact dermatitis
White or yellow scale, flaky, background erythema, may or may not be pruritic
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Small vesicles, very pruritic, diffuse peeling after a flare. Occurs in areas of high moisture
Dyshidrotic eczema
Erythematous round patches usually in one spot
Nummular eczema
Occurs on the lower legs secondary to vascular disease
Stasis dermatitis
Occurs because of patient picking
Neurodermatitis
Chronic itch scratch cycle
Lichen Simplex Chronicus
Sharply define tan to black lesion, accompanied by mild pruritis if irritated
Seborrheic Keratosis
Scaly, flaky, rough lesions occurring on face, ears, scalp, forearms, chest accompanied by cutaneous horn
Actinic keratosis
A sore that does not heal, a pearly shiny bump, a scar like appearance, or a red scaly crusted patch
Basal cell skin cancer
Thick rough horn like lesion, wart like sore, or irregular rough red patch that persists. Can arise on skin that has been injured, such as burns, scars, long standing sores
Squamous cell skin cancer
Most common type of melanoma
Superficial spreading
Melanoma involving elderly, chronically damaged skin
Lentigo malgina
Melanoma under the nails or palms of hands, soles of feet
Acral lentiginous
Melanoma that starts invasive, trunk, legs, arms, scalp of men
Nodular melanoma
Begins as discrete red or purple patches, become elevated and evolve into nodules and plaques
Kaposi sarcoma
Tense bullae arise on any part of the skin surface, with a predilection for the flexural areas of the skin
Bullous Pemphigoid
Presents with target lesions-Clear center with erythematous rings
Erythema Multiforme
Characterized by blisters, epidermal detachment, and epidermal necrosis
Stevens Johnson Syndrome
Widespread erythema, necrosis, and bullous detachment of the epidermis and mucous membranes on >30% BSA
Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
Chronic inflammatory and neurovascular condition
Rosacea
Symmetrical hyperpigmented velvety plaques
Acanthosis nigricans
Disorder of the terminal follicular epithelium in the apocrine gland bearing skin, starts as erythema, to papules, to abcess, to scarring
Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Benign subcutaneous fatty tumors
Lipomas
Proliferation of epidermal cells within a circumscribed space in the dermis, leads to flesh colored firm round nodule
Epidermal inclusion cyst
Hypermelanosis of sun exposed skin
Melasma
Melanocyte destruction leading to depigmented macules or patches
Vitiligo
Raised well circumscribed wheal of erythema and edema
Urticaria
An area of unrelieved pressure over a defined area, usually over a bony prominence, resulting in ischemia, cell death, and tissue necrosis
Pressure ulcers
A cyst that occurs near the tailbone at the top of the cleft of the buttocks
Pilondal disease
Fungal infection of the nails
Onychomycosis
Soft tissue infection that occurs around the fingernail
Paronychia
Recurrent non scarring alopecia that can affect any hair bearing area
Alopecia areata
Gradual conversion of terminal hairs to indeterminate hairs to vellus hairs; genetic baldness
Androgenetic alopecia
Parasite that produces an irritating saliva, leading to pruritis
Lice
Parasitic infection presenting with itching, popular rash, and burrows
Scabies
Spider bite with central induration with a zone of ischemia and zone of erythema
Brown recluse spider
Painful cramps spread from bite, leading to rigidity and pain
Black widow spider
Superficial pustule that ruptures and forms a yellow brown honey colored crust
Impetigo
A fiery-red, hot, indurated, tense, shiny plaque with abrupt demarcation
Erysipelas
Red patch with swelling erythema, and pain on lower extremities. Can expand to fever, chills, malaise
Cellulitis
Finely scaly patches that are usually pink or white
Tinea versicolor
Servere pruritis, denuded, beefy red skin, white curd-like collections of mucusa.
Candidiasis
Grouped vesicles that occur in a unilateral dermatomal pattern
Herpes Zoster
Umbilicated dome shaped pink papulales normally found in children
Molluscum Contagiosum
Warts
Verrucae
