Lab Diagnosis of Sepsis Flashcards
What is the BactT-alert?
Large incubator which holds and processes blood cultures = flags positive bottles for further analysis, negatives removed after 5-7 days
What does MALDI-TOF do?
Identifies organisms on positive cultures using mass spectroscopy
What are some sensitivity tests done in the lab?
E-test = determines MIC of one antibiotic Vitek = determines MIC of more than one antibiotic at once
What is the pre-test probability?
Likelihood of a patient having a diagnosis prior to test
What is the post-test probability?
Likelihood of a patient having a diagnosis once the test result is available
What is the sensitivity of a test?
Probability a test is positive if the disease is present
What is the specificity of a test?
Probability a test is negative if the disease is absent
How can bacterial pneumonia be differentiated from viral pneumonia by the symptoms present?
Bacterial causes unilateral changes, neutrophilia, productive cough and there is a lack of lymphopenia
What is the main diagnostic test for cellulitis?
Blood cultures
What is the streptex test?
Latex agglutination test = identifies different streptococcal groups
What patients should urinalysis be avoided in?
Those >65 and those with long term catheters
What is the first line treatment for a complicated UTI?
IV amoxicillin and gentamicin
What is the leading cause of UTI?
E.coli
