Lab Apparatus and Functions Flashcards
Triple Beam Balance
It is an instrument used to measure mass very precisely. The device has reading
error of +/- 0.05 gram.
Analytical Balance
A class of balance designed to measure small mass in the sub- milligram range.
Bunsen Burner
A type of gas burner, commonly used in chemical laboratories, with which a very hot, practically nonluminous flame is obtained by allowing air to enter at the base and mix with the gas.
Hot Plate
ability to heat the sample without any exposed flames
Wire Gauze
A sheet of thin metal that is used to protect the glassware during the heating process.
Iron Ring
Used as base to hold the wire gauze and any other container to be
heated.
Iron Clamp
Used to hold the test tube, distilling flask, and other apparatus to be
heated.
Iron Stand
Supports the iron ring and iron clamp during heating, distillation, and other extraction purposes.
Clay Triangle
Supports the crucible on an iron ring when heating.
Crucible Tongs
A tool used to hold hot materials or apparatus.
Crucible and Cover
A heat resistant container with cover in which ores or materials are melted.
Evaporating Dish
A shallow heat resistant porcelain dish in which a solution is heated and allowed to
evaporate leaving a residue on its plate.
Beakers
Least accurate instrument for measuring volume
Graduated Cylinder
Used to precisely measure the volume of liquids
Volumetric Flask
Used to measure a single predetermined volume
