Lab 8 - metabolism Flashcards
Define: metabolism
The sum of all of the chemical reactions that occur in an organism.
Define: catabolism
A process in which large organic molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. Releases energy.
Define: anabolism
A process in which small precursor molecules are assembled into larger organic molecules. Energy dependent.
Define: metabolic rate
The amount of energy used by an animal within a specific period of time.
Define: cellular respiration
The controlled oxidation of cellular fuels (macromcules). Produces the energy required for metabolism.
Metabolic rate equation:
How to measure metabolic rate:
Closed system respirometry: confine an animal in closed chamber and measure oxygen consumption over time using an oxygen electrode or performing chemical titration.
Factors that affect metabolic rate:
Temperature, size, weight. Others: physical activity, diet, health, and hormones.
__therms have a higher metabolic rate than __therms.
Endo, ecto.
Trend between weight and oxygen consumption rate:
Linear positive. Heavier = higher rate.
Trend between weight and oxygen consumption rate per weight:
Linear negative. Smaller = higher rate per weight.
Experiment 1: fish
Take 0% and 100% oxygen readings. Find oxygen concentration at given temperature and calibrate to 100%. Let fish swim around and record oxygen consumption.
Units:
Convert mV to mM.
What does the R2 value indicate?
How well the regression line fits a set of data.
