Lab 6 - lung lab Flashcards
Surface area of human lungs vs human body surface area:
50-100 m2; 2 m2
Structure of human lungs:
Series of branching tubes that end in alveoli, small membraneous air sacs.
Factors that influence gas exchange between lungs and blood:
Surface area, diffusion distance, and concentration gradient.
Let's talk acronyms: TV IRV/ERV RV VC TLC
TV: tidal volume. volume of a normal breath.
IRV/ERV: inspiratory/expiratory reserve volume. how much you can in/exhale after TV.
RV: residual volume. the air you can’t breathe out no matter what.
VC: vital capacity. the total amount of air that can be inspired and expired.
TLC: total lung capacity. the total volume that the lungs can hold.
TV and breathing rate are regulated by the __ in the __.
Respiratory centre, medulla oblongata.
Receptors that can affect TV and breathing rate:
Peripheral chemoreceptors (for O2, CO2, and pH) and stretch receptors in the lungs.
Experiment 1: exercise and breathe
Measure TV, IRV, ERV with spirometer. Exercise. Do step 1 again.
Units:
Convert mV to L.
Breathing rate (breaths/min) calculation:
(60 seconds/minute) / mean breath period (sec/breath)
Minute respiratory volume (L/min) calculation:
Breathing rate * TV
TLC calculation: (from VC)
VC = 0.75 TLC
Phys sig of experiment 1:
TV should go up, IRV and ERV should go down, VC should stay the same.
