Lab 8 Flashcards
Reflex
A quick, involuntary response to a stimulus
Somatic reflexes
Produce a response in skeletal muscle
Autonomic reflexes
Produce a response in smooth/cardiac muscle or glands
What is the test for the pupillary light reflex?
Subject sits with closed eyes for one minute, then a light is flashed into their eyes
What is the normal response for the pupillary light reflex?
Pupil constriction in response to retina stimulation by bright light
Which cranial nerve contains the sensory fibers for the pupillary light reflex?
II - optic nerve
Which cranial nerve contains the motor fibers for the pupillary light reflex?
III - oculomotor nerve
What is the test for the ciliospinal reflex?
Tester pinches the back of subject’s neck firmly
What is the normal response for the ciliospinal reflex?
Pupil dilation in response to a painful stimulus
What is the test for the oculocardiac reflex?
Tester records seated subject’s pulse. Subject then applies pressure to their eyes and tester records pulse again
What is the normal response for the oculocardiac reflex?
A slowing/decrease in pulse in response to pressure over eyes
Which cranial nerve contains the sensory fibers for the oculocardiac reflex?
V - trigeminal nerve
Which cranial nerve contains the motor fibers for the oculocardiac reflex?
X - vagus nerve
What is the test for the patellar reflex?
Subject sits in a chair with legs crossed and eyes closed. Tester taps patellar tendon with a rubber hammer
What is the normal response for the patellar reflex?
Knee extension
What is the test for the Achilles’ reflex?
Subject stands with one knee on a chair and relaxes leg muscles. Tester dorsiflexes subject’s foot to stretch gastrocnemius muscle and taps the Achilles’ tendon with a rubber hammer
What is the normal response for the Achilles’ reflex?
Slight plantarflexion
What is the test for the babinski reflex?
Subject is barefoot. Tester runs the tip of a rubber hammer on the subject’s sole from the heel to the arch
What is the normal response for the babinski reflex?
No response
What is the abnormal response for the babinski reflex? Who would present this way?
Dosiflexion and spread toes
Children under 2 or those with CNS damage
List 5 ways to test cerebellar function.
- Stretch both arms to the side and snap the fingers of both hands
- Turn to the side and look straight ahead. Walk a straight line placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toe of the other foot
- Close your eyes and touch your nose with the index finger of your left hand.
- Close your eyes and touch your nose with the index finger of your right hand.
- Stand erect and move the heel of your right foot up and down the shin of your left leg.
Which reflexes are classified as autonomic?
Pupillary light reflex
Ciliospinal reflex
Oculocardiac reflex
Which reflexes are classified as somatic?
Patellar reflex
Achilles’ reflex
Babinski reflex
