Lab 6 Flashcards
Objectives 1
Explain the difference between sample size and variance
Objectives 2
Perform an ANOVA test to test the relationship between three means
Objectives 3
Apply the results from statistical tests to evaluate support for hypotheses
In this lab
I will be learning more about the scientific method and about how statistical analyses are used to test hypotheses using the data from the SDH lab.
Objectives 4
Relate how the terms “significant” and significant level” are used in statistical tests and in scientific writing
How does the scientific method answer questions
By testing hypotheses using observation and experimentation
Statistical tests tell me
Whether the difference between data sets is likely to be due to sampling error or not.
ANOVA
(ANalysis Of VArience) - One of the statistical tests that I will be using
Tukey HSD
(Honestly Significant Difference) - Second statistical tests that does a pair wise comparison of each homogenates to give a p value
Standard Deviation
One measure of how data are dispersed around the mean
Standard Deviation summarizes
How close observations are to the mean, taking into account the sample size
Example of SD
Flipping a coin 100 times. One would fall in one from the mean, The other would fall within two sd
What is the purpose of calculating a statistical value
To determine if my data is so different from what is predicted by my null hypothesis that I would reject the null.
P value
The probability that you would observe the test value if your null hypothesis were supported.
3% p value
0.030
