Lab 5: Taphonomy Flashcards
biotic factor
something that happened to a dinosaur that is found in the fossil but was not the cause of death (lost tooth)
thanatic factor
found in the fossil and was the cause of death
perthotaxic
scavenging. Leaves brown marks
taphic
burial/tomb. Fossilization, erosion, decomposition
anataxic
without being what it once was, rounding off, breaking off after fossilization.
travel/movement of the specimen will cause rounding, less/no movement will be angled/sharp
sullgenic
damage to fossil during collection (digging it up). Leaves white marks.
trephic factor
damage done in lab after fossil collection. Chemical analysis wetting/drying cycles
non factor
specimen is nearly/completely intact with little to no damage. Amber or frozen in ice.
