Lab 5: Base Extraction Flashcards
1
Q
Formula for fraction of solute remaining in orginal solvent
A
Fa= (Vo/ KVx + Vo) ^n
Vo= volume orginal solvent GC= volume extracting solvent N= number extractions K= partition coefficient
2
Q
For effective acid base extraction
A
Keq > 1.0
Pkeq = pKa (acid left) - pKa (acid on right)
Keq = 10^ -( pkeq)
3
Q
Requirements for extracting solvent
A
- Does not react irreversibly with the solute being extracted
- Immiscible with orginal solvent
- Selectively removes desired compounds
- Easily separated from solute
4
Q
Requirements for recrystallization solvent
A
- Not reactive with desired products
- Desired product is completely soluble at elevated temperatures but only slightly soluble at room temperatures
- Undesired components are highly soluble at all temperatures.
- Easily removed from crystalline product by filtration and evaporation.
5
Q
Three groups that are commonly ionized
A
Carboxylic acid, phenol, ammonium cation/ amine with OH-, OH-, and water
