Lab 4: Steam Distillation. Carvone. Flashcards
Advantages of steam distillation
Distill liquids with high boiling points at temperatures greator than 100
Avoids high temp simple/fractional could cause decomposition
Requirements
- non reactive with water
- immicible in water
- Stable at 100
- Partial pressure greater than 5 torr at 100 degrees
Raoutls law
Since x is not soluble in water. Px does not depend on its mole fraction in mixture
Dalton’s law
Total partial pressure is sum of partial pressure Pt=Patm
The total vapor pressure is always higher than the most volatile component always water
The Bp of mixture is always lower than the lowest boiling component alway water
Properties of enantiomers
All same. But differ in how they interact with plane polarized light. Different optical properties.
Enantiomers will rotate the plane of light the same magnitude but in opposite directions
Formula for calculating compositon of condensate
Grams A divide by Grams B=
Pa)(molar mass A)/ (Pb)(molar mass B
