Lab 4 Flashcards
What are neurons?
nerve cells, are the fundamental building blocks of the nervous system.
What do neurons do?
They are specialized cells that transmit information in the form of electrical signals throughout the body.
Afferent neurons
Afferent neurons, also known as sensory neurons, are a type of nerve cell that carries signals from sensory organs or receptors toward the central nervous system (CNS)
Efferent neurons
are a type of nerve cell that carries signals from the central nervous system (CNS) to effector organs, such as muscles or glands
Interneurons
are a type of nerve cell found entirely within the central nervous system (CNS).
What is a synapse?
A synapse is a specialized junction or connection between two nerve cells (neurons) where they communicate with each other.
How are messages conveyed between neurons?
synaptic transmission.
What are the components of the central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
function of the brain and spinal cord
the brain and spinal cord work together to process information, regulate bodily functions, and enable both voluntary and involuntary movements
What are the components of the peripheral nervous system?
The peripheral nervous system (PNS) consists of nerves and ganglia located outside the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord. The PNS is responsible for transmitting sensory information to the CNS and carrying motor commands from the CNS to muscles and glands.
Describe the difference between in response time between visual and auditory cues
Patellar reflex
knee jerk
Define monosynaptic arch
refers to a neural pathway that involves only one synapse
