Lab 3 Pre-quiz Flashcards
Passive transport
substances pass through the plasma membranes without requiring cellular energy
Active transport
the cell provides energy in the form of ATP to move substances across the membrane
Diffusion
The movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration
Investagating factors affecting diffusion of molecules in agar
-what are we trying to discover
would dyes that are larger in molecular size move faster in the agar or would smaller molecules
Diffusion of molecules through dialysis
-what are we trying to discover
- How does the size of a molecule affect its ability to pass through the dialysis sac pores
- Would a molecule pass through that is larger or smaller than the pore size?
- Which would pass through more quickly, an intermediate size molecule smaller than the pore size or a very small molecule?
Osmosis
The movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration to an area of lower water concentration
Osmosis in an egg
-what are we trying to discover
The osmolarity of the extra cellular fluids bathing cells affects water movement into and out of cells thereby influencing cell size and shape
Isotonic
a solution that has the same concentration of solutes as plasma
-cells in an isotonic solution have the same concentration of solutes and water inside and outside
Hypotonic
a solution that has a lower concentration of solutes than plasma
- have a greater concentration of water than plasma
- the cell will swell and can burst (hemolysis)
Hypertonic
a solution that has a higher concentration of solutes than plasma
- have a lower concentration of water than plasma
- cells will shrink (crenation)
