Lab 3 Limbic lobe and Brainstem Flashcards
what are the 2 major interconnections between the brain?
commissural fibers and association fibers
what do the commissural fibers connect?
connect the 2 hemispheres of the brain
what do the association fibers connect?
connect areas within the same hemisphere
What are the main structures of commissural fibers?
corpus callosum and the anterior commissure
what are the main structures of association fibers? And what do they do?
short association fibers
long association fibers
connect adjacent gyri
what are the 4 long association fibers? And what do they do?
superior longitudinal fasciculus uncinate fasciculus arcuate fasciculus cingulum they connect distant areas of the same hemispheres
what fasciculus connects the Wernike’s to the Broca’s area?
Arcuate fasciculus. damage to this causes conductive aphasia’s
what fibers run up and down to the cortex and come from the internal capsule?
corona radiata
what structure lies just deep to the cingulate gyrus and runs from the frontal lone to the hippocampus and interconnects the prefrontal areas with the temporal lobe?
Cingulum
what kind of functions does the cingulate gyrus have?
visceral motor functions
what does the limbic system function in?
reward, empathy, memories and emotional responses
what does the limbic lobe function in?
Declaritive memory -> facts (puts short term knowledge into long term memory/facts)
what structures are part of the limbic lobe?
hippocampus, fornix (crus, body and columns), mamillary bodies and anterior thalamus
damage to the limbic lobe or any structure within the limbic lobe would result in what?
anterograde amnesia (inability to create new memories, working memory still intact) -> extent will vary b/n unilateral and bilateral damage
ascending and descending tracts (such as corticospinal etc) all travel within the (blank) limb of the internal capsule
posterior limb
