Lab 2 internal brain features and CSF circulation Flashcards
What structures does the anterior limb of the internal capsule separate?
caudate from the lenticular nucleus
what structures does the posterior limb of the internal capsule separate?
thalamus from the lenticular nucleus
what structure does the thalamus bulge into?
third ventricle
what structure does the caudate bulge into?
lateral wall of the lateral ventricle
where is CSF produced?
choroid plexus found in all 4 ventricles
how does CSF travel from the lateral ventricles to the 3rd ventricles?
foramen of monroe
how does CSF travel from the third ventricle to the 4th ventricle
cerebral aqueduct
how does CSF exit the 4th ventricle?
exits into subarachnoid via foramen Luschka and the foramen of Megendie
how does CSF exit the subarachnoid space?
drains into the superior sagittal sinus by way of arachnoid granulations.
what are the 4 major cisterns?
cisterna magna
superior cistern
pontine cistern
interpeduncular cistern
what are the characteristics of the cervical spinal cord?
large amount of white matter
what are the characteristics of the thoracic spinal cord?
presence of the lateral horn
what are the characteristics of the lumbar spinal cord?
large amount of gray matter
