Lab 3 Exam Flashcards
Conception
Occurse in uterine tubes, genetic matieral from the sperm and egg join t oform a single cell called a zygote
Cleavage
zygote begins to divide
Blastomere
two identical cells in the zygote (and 4 and 8)
Morula
16 cell stage forms 3 days after conception and enters uterus by day 6
Blastula
Morula develops into blastula (also called blastocyst in humans)
fluid filled cavity (blastocoele) develops in center
development of inner cell mass (embryoblast)
Outer group of cells called trophoblasts form membranes that nourish embryo
Trophoblast
outer group of cells on blastula that form mebrane and nourish embryo
Blastocyst
containing 200-300 cells which implants on the endometrium 6-7 days after conception
Stages of uterine cycle
Proliferative (glands are small and tubular, shrinkage of tissue creates false space AROUND gland)
Secretory (glands have saw-tooth appearance and with no false space around gland)
Menstrual (hell)
1st month
Embryonic stage
-Brain and spinal cord begin development
-heartbeat begins fourth or fifth week
2nd month
heart is fully formed by week 8
arm/leg buds are visible
3rd month
Fetal stage begins at week 11
-begins period of fast growth
-external features well formed
4th month
-gender is identifiable
-develops reflex for sucking
5th month
-lanugo begins to cover the skin
-fetus begins making active movements
7th month
sufficient lung development (but no surfactant)
fetus can survive birth
Epididymis
site of sperm maturation and storage
Corona radiata
granulosa cells directly surrounding the oocyte. The cells are released with the oocyte at ovulation
cumulus oophorus
cluster of cells that attaches the oocyte to the wall of the follicle
zona pellucida
glycoprotein membrane surrounding the oocyte;
contains sperm receptors and is digested by acrosome
Identify blurred out red
Vas deferens
Identify yellow arrow
Ejaculatory duct

Identify cells (in testes)
Interstitial (leydig) cells
(Make testosterone)
Identify (in testes)
Spermatocytes
Identify cells attached to basement membrane
Spermatogonia
Identify
Spermatids (elongated)
Identify
Sertoli cells
(Lie near basement membrane, lighter in color, triangular vs ovoid in shape)
Identify two types of cells
Darker is spermatogonia
Lighter is Sertoli cells
Identify
Epididymis
Site of sperm maturation and storage
Type of cells (epididymis)
Pseirostratified epithilium
Identify (epididymis)
Sperm cells in lumen
Identify both (penis)

Graafian (mature) follicle
Secondary follicle
Antral follicle
Tertiary/Graafian follicle
Corona radiata
Granulosa cells directly surrounding the oocyte. The cells are released with the oocyte at ovulation
Cumulus oophorus
Cluster of cells that attaches the oocyte to the wall of the follicle
Zona pellucida
Glycoprotein membrane surrounding the oocyte
-contains sperm receptors and is digested by acrosome
From zygote to fetus
Zygote, two blastomeres, 4 blastomeres, morula (16 cell stage), blastula, blastocyst (200-300 cells)
