Lab 3 Flashcards
Solute
substance that is dissolved in a liquid (juice crystals)
Solvent
a liquid that has dissolved or can dissolve solute (water)
Solution
A solvent with it’s dissolved solutes
Diffusion
random movement of molecules of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
Osmosis
the movement of a solvent through a selectively permeable membrane from an area of low concentration to and area of high concentration
Isotonic conditions
equal movement of solute going in and out of a cell
Hypertonic conditions
solute moves into the cell by osmosis (gets smaller)
Hypotonic conditions
solute moves out of the cell by osmosis (gets bigger)
What term refers to allowing the passage of some molecules into a cell
semi-permeable/
selectively permeable
change in weight formula
final weight-initial weight
——————————–x100
initial weight
What did distilled water do to the egg
hypotonic, made it get bigger
What did 0.35M sucrose do to the egg
Isotonic, stayed the same
What did 1M sucrose do to the egg
Hypertonic, got smaller
Turgor Pressure
net movement of water into a cell causing the central vacuole to increase in volume, forcing the plasma membrane to push outward, membrane keeps it from bursting
Where is anthocyanin stored
central vacuole
What happens when you add 3% NaCl to a coral bell plant leaf
causes the pigment to go to the middle of the cell leaving the edges clear
How to prokaryotes divide
binary fission
diagram of binary fission
Chromatin
a combination of DNA and proteins which make up chromosomes
