2 step process on taking BP
Step 1
- find brachial pulse, align cuff with artery
- estimating when systolic pressure will be
- inflate cuff while reading radial pulse, when pulse stops, remember this number and pump 30 above it for step 2
Step 2
- inflate cuff with stethoscope on brachial artery
- inflate 30 above previously mentioned mark
- slowly release valve
- first sound - systolic pressure
- first absence of sound - diastolic pressure
Systolic BP
First sound heard
Diastolic BP
First absence of sound
NOT last sound
Differences between step 1 and step 2 for taking BP
Step 1
- no stethoscope
- taking radial pulse
- only looking for systolic (when radial pulse stops)
Step 2
- stethoscope
- not taking radial pulse
- looking for both systolic and diastolic
