Lab 3 Flashcards
Breathing
Exchange of O2 & CO2 between cell & atmosphere for aerobic respiration
How does air move in & out of lungs
Pressure difference between intrapulmonary air (IP) & atmospheric air (ATM)
IP < ATM - air into lungs
ATM > IP - air out of lungs
Inspiration
Diaphragm & intercostal muscles contract - diaphragm down, ribs up & out - volume increases - air rush into alveoli - negative pressure breathing
Expiration
Diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax - thoracic cavity back to normal - air forces out of lungs
IC
Inspiration capacity (TC+IRV) - air that can be breathed into lungs after exhaling
IRV
Inspiration reserve volume - amount inspired after tidal inspiration
TV
Tidal volume - goes into lungs at rest ~ 500ml
FRC
Functional residual volume (ERV + RV) volume after normal passive exhalation ~ 3L
VC
Vital capacity (IRV+TV+ERV) max. amount of air expelled after max. inhalation
ERV
Expiration reserve volume - extra volume expired after normal expiration
RV
Residual volume - volume of air after max. expiration
TLC
Total lung capacity (IRV+TV+ERV+RV)
Peaked flow measurement
Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) - max. exhalation after max. inspiration - mini-Wirgjt peak-flow meter
Measurement for CO2 production experiment
75mls dH20, 2mls 0.1M NaOH, 5 drops phenolphthalein - pink-colourless
