Lab 3 Flashcards
Form Bahiagrass how can it be identified?
- Short, fleshy rhizomes (purple)
- Tissue above soil surface is primarily leaf blade (also flowering stems at times)
- Sheath, purple at base
- Receme inflorescence, often two racemes
When it comes to Management of Bahiagrass why is it important and what are its advantages?
- Importance is that it coveres 2.5 million acres in florida
- Advantages are:
* Seed propogated
* Tolerant of many kinds of soil drainage & fertility
* Tolerant of heavy grazing in general (Tifton 9 & UF-riata are less tolerant than argetine & pensacola)
* Does not need fertilization
What is the disadvantage of Bahiagrass management wise?
- Low nutritive value & relatively low yielding
- Susceptible to mole crickets (insect pests)
In bermuda grass how are they identifiable?
- Strong stoloniferous
- Sparse, relativley long hairs at collar region
- Has rhizomes
- Receme inflorescence
What is the important of Bermudagrass and what are its advantages?
- Approximately 350,000 acres in Florida, mainly in north for hay production
- High yielding quantities
- Takes up large quantities of nutrients
- Higher in nutrition than bahiagrass
- Cold tolerant
What are the disadvantages of Bermudagrass in managment?
- Not as grazing tolerant as bahiagrass
- Requires good soil fertility
- Often attacked by loopers & fall army worm during summer/fall
When it comes to stargrass what make it recognizable ?
- Strong stoloniferous
- Sparse, relatively long hairs at collar region
- no rhizomes
- raceme inflorescence
What is Stargrass’s importance and advantages?
- Approximately 100,000 acres in florida
- Rapid establishment (vegetative)
- Higher yeilding & higher in nutritive value than bahiagrass
What are the disadvantages of Stargrass in managment?
- Not as grazing tolerant as bahiagrass
- Requires good soil fertility
- Not cold tolerant
How can Digitgrass be identified?
- Strongly stoloniferous
- prominents membraneous ligule
- No rhizomes
- Raceme inflorescence (digit-like)
What is the importance of Digitgrass and its advantages?
- Less than 500,000 acres and decreasing
- Very high in digestibility for a tropical grass
- Higher yielding than bahiagrass
What are the disadvantages in managemnt for Digitgrass?
- Not tolerant of typical grazial managment used in Florida
- Not cold tolerant ( grown south in orlando)
How can limpograss be identified?
- Strongly stoloniferous
- upright growth habit & thick stem (generally not suited for hay production)
- Reddish purple stem coloration
- No rhizomes
- Spike-like raceme inflorescence
What is the importance and advantage in managment of limpograsses?
- Approximately 400,000 acres in florida
- High yielding
- Adopted to wetsites
- High digestability, decrease slowly with maturity
- Cold tolerant, used primarily for winter grazing in south FL.
What is the disadvantage in limpograss in terms of management?
- Not as grazing tolerant as bahiagrass
- Low crude protein
- Hard to dry for hay (stemmy)
