Lab 1 Flashcards
How are plants named and how do their names consist across the world?
Named with a common name & scientific name (scientific name based off Genus & Species)
How does one distinguish between plant anatomy and plant morphology?
- Anatomy is the cellular structure of a plant
- The safer stucture is what morphology is the part of the plant that can be appreciated visually
- (can be differentiated based off scale of appreciation)
What do the Stem, Roots, and Leaf do?
Individually not as a group defined
- Support
- Both support & nutrient uptake
- Photosynthesis
What can be used on plant structures to distinguish one plant from another.
- Leaf shape, size texture
- Typo of seed & inflorescence
- Flower of plant
- Collar region contains distinctive structures
What does the term “growth habit” mean?
- It is the form of the plant that is affected by its environment examples:
-Upright
-decombanant
-Sod
-Bunch - Stems position determines growth habits
When it comes to growth habit what benefits could help it become a forage plant?
- Prevents invasion of weeds
- Regrowth capabilities
- Tolerance of environment
What is the internode part of a stem?
Usually a hollow, sometimes pithy or solid, region of a stem between nodes
What is a Node?
It is a solid joint of a grass stem where leaf sheaths are attached to the stem
What are the parts of a stem?
- Internode
- Node
What are the types of stems?
- Upright or ascending
- Stolons
- Rhizomes
What is a Leaf?
It is borne on the stem, one at each node, and they project alternately in two rows on opposite sides of the stem
What is a Blade?
The portion of the leaf connected to the sheath and extending outward
What is the Sheath?
It surrounds the stem above the node where it is attached
What is the Collar?
The region at the junction of the sheath and blade
What is a Ligule?
- It is an appednage that clasps the stem where the sheath and blade join
Distinguishing features include
* A membrane
* Fringe of hairs
* Hardening ring
* A reliable characteristic for identification
What is an Auricle?
It is an outgrwoth from the base of the blade that may be prominent and encircle the stem, may be inconspicuous, may be absent
What are the types of inflorescences?
- Spike
- Raceme
- Panicle
What is the definition of a spike?
Spikelets are sessile on an unbranched axis called a rachilla or a rachis
What is a Raceme?
They are spikelets that are borne on short pedicels (brances) attached to the axis that is called a rachis
What are 2 forms of growing points (Meristems)
1.Apical Meristem
2.Intercalary meristem
What is a Crown?
What is a Crown?
1.It may be an underground, overwintering structure in some plants
2.Is the basal portion of the stem
3.Can produce new tillers in certain plants (alfalfa)
What is a Petiole?
Leaf stalk
What is a leaflet?
one of the “blades” of a compound leaf
What is a Petiolule?
It is a stalk of the leaflet
What is a Stipule?
A pair of leaf-like outgrowth that occur at the base of the petiole
What are the 3 types of inflorescenes?
- Raceme
- Head
- Spike-like raceme
