Lab 2 Flashcards

1
Q

What is growth habit, what are morphological structures and characterstics that are primary determinants of growth habit?

A
  1. The direction it grows in, due to environemnt. DIrection, if it is upright-descending (tiller), decombant or stolon, Bunch being a descriptor for tiller and sod being descriptor for Stolon.
  2. Stems are very determining of characterstic, environment, angle, type.

Q

What would be one very tolerant plant when it comes to grazing or grows rapidly after defoliation?

A

1.Rhizomes due to nodes growing under ground to maintain plant in place
2.Spreads all around
3.It can regrow almost wherever, very resistant

Q

Is growth habit of a plant fixed or can it grow over time?

A
  1. Yes, can change due to environment & external facotrs that could potentially change its direction of growth & ability
  2. Apaptable

Q

Can how growth habits outcompete its neighbors? (involving plants)

A
  1. Upright can get rid of competition blocking sunlight,
  2. Decombant can take up space to prevent from other grasses to grow.
  3. Legumes have advantage in low nitrogen environments

Q

How does biological N fixation generally occur, what category of organism fixes N and where does it occur?

A
  1. Legumes can help in low nitrogen areas
  2. Bacteria
  3. Occurs through nodules through photosynthesis of plants

Q

When it comes to nitrogen fixation how well do plants, animals, and environment interact with nitrogen or how do they obtain them?

A
  1. Plants need it in order to obtain the nitrogen they need.
  2. Animals need legumes in order to obtain nitrogen
  3. Through environment avoiding synthetic fertilizer no inorganic stuff will help. Since the inorganic type is highly soluble we do not need more of a carbon footprint
