Lab 20- Respiratory & Lymphatic Systems Flashcards
During life what was found in the bronchi?
Air
Name the sinuses on the skull
Ethmoid
Frontal
Maxillary
Sphenoid
What kind of cartilage is in the bronchi?
Hyaline cartilage
What is the lobe difference between the right and the left lungs.
Left: Superior & Inferior
Right: Superior, Middle, Inferior
What is the difference in fissures between the right and left lung?
Left: Oblique
Right: Oblique, Horizontal
What is the function of the diaphragm?
Major muscle used in inspiration
Define Phrenic nerves.
What spinal roots contribute to this nerve?
- Runs along the pericardial sac to the diaphragm
* C3, 4, 5
- Define pharyngeal tonsil (adenoid)
* What is the name of the surgery that removes these?
- Only one near the opening of the auditory tube.
* Adenoidectomy
Where does the auditory tube lead? (Where is the other end)
Middle ear
What bones from the nasal conchae?
Ethmoid➡️ Superior & middle nasal conchae
Inferior nasal concha is it’s own bone.
What are the internal and external nares?
Your nose holes.
What bones form the nasal septum?
Vomer & ethmoid (perpendicular plate)
Where is the palatine arch located?
Behind the molars
What bones from the hard and soft palate?
Maxilla & Palatine
What happens in cleft palate?
What problems does that create for an infant born with cleft palate?
- Two sides of the hard palate do not come together. The oral & nasal cavities are continuous instead of separated by the palate
- This makes it difficult for newborns to nurse.
Where is the lingual tonsil located?
Embedded in the posterior 1/3 of the tongue (base of tongue)
- Location of palatine tonsil.
* What is the surgery called that removes these tonsils?
- Between the arches posterior to the molars
* Tonsillectomy
What type of cartilage is found in the epiglottis?
Elastic Cartilage
What is the function of the epiglottis?
Closes off the larynx during swallowing
What is the function of the larynx?
Produce speech; pathway for air to lungs
Another name for vocal cords
True vocal folds
Describe Cricoid cartilage
Like a signet ring; larger posterior & more narrow anterior.
- Describe thyroid cartilage.
* What is the common name for the laryngeal prominence?
- Like a shield; broad in the front
* Adam’s apple
- Describe trachea and tracheal rings.
- What type of cartilage ales up these rings?
- What is their function?
- Tracheal rings are shaped like a “C” with the opening facing posterior.
- Hyaline cartilage
- Keep the trachea open
