Lab 2-Eimeria Flashcards
Phylum of Eimeria
Plasmodium
Kingdom of Eimeria
Animalia
Commonly called?
Coccidia
What do they commonly infect?
Epithelial cells of birds and mammals
How do animals get the Eimeria oocysts?
Contaminated water or food source
What disease do they cause?
Coccidiosis
Where in the host do oocytes excyt?
Intestines
What do oocysts release after excysition?
Sporozoites
Where do sporozoites go after excysting?
Penetrate into intestinal epithelial cells
What type of reproduction happens when sporozoites infect intestinal epithelial cells?
Schizogony/merogony
asexual reproduction
How many rounds of merogony do Eimeria usu. do?
1-4 depending on species
When does gametogony occur and where?
After ~3 rounds of merogony; intestinal epithelial cells
Is Eimeria an intra or extracellular parasite?
Intracellular
How do oocysts reach next host?
Pass through feces and deposited in water or food sources
When do oocysts sporulate?
After a few days of being passed in the feces (outside of previous host’s body)
Are infections self-limitig?
Yes
How many hosts does it need?
1
When is Eimeria infective?
After it has spent a few days outside previous host. It needs to sporulate first
How many sporocysts does one oocyst produce?
4
What are important features of Eimeria that define each species?
- Number of sporocysts in each oocyst
- Positions, and presence or absence, of refractile bodies and sporocyst or oocyst residual bodies
How many sporozoites are in one sporocyst?
depends on the species
How is Eimeria oocyst different from Plasmodium oocyst?
Eimeria oocyst produce resistant membrane and is passed through feces (outside host) while Plasmodium oocyst has no resistant membrane and releases sporozoites inside vector
