Lab 2 Flashcards
Clade
a group of organisms believed to have evolved from a common ancestor
Gene Flow
Mechanism of evolution
-the transfer of alleles or genes from one population to another
Genetic Drift
variation in the relative frequency of different genotypes in a small population, owing to the chance disappearance of particular genes as individuals die or do not reproduce.
Molecular clock hypothesis
Continuous accumulation of mutations can be used to estimate how long ago the ancestors of currently living species split into different lineages (divergence times)
Multiple Sequence Alignment
sequence alignment of three or more biological sequences, generally protein, DNA, or RNA. In many cases, the input set of query sequences are assumed to have an evolutionary relationship by which they share a lineage and are descended from a common ancestor
Single Base Substitution
A mutation that has one nucleotide base replaced with another
