Protist
eukaryotic organisms that are not plants, animals or fungi. This group is paraphyletic (represent some but not all, of the descendants of a single ancestor)
Characteristics of Protists
i. Eukaryotic
ii. Unicellular, some colonial or multicellular
iii. Calls larger than prokaryotes
iv. Motile stage at one point in life cycle
v. Reproduce asexually
vi. Most are aquatic
vii. Photoautotrophs, chemoheterotrophs and mixotrophs
viii. 3 informal groups
1. Protozoa (animal like): ingest
2. Algae (plant like): photosynthesis
3. Fungus-like: absorption
Protists Diseases
a. Malaria cause by plasmodium through mosquitoes
b. Red tides caused by dinoflagellates builds up toxin in the tissue of shellfish which humans eat
