Lab 2 Flashcards
What are the 5 kinds of white blood cells?
Neutrophils
Basophils
Eosinopils
Lymphoctes
Monocytes
What do neutrophils do?
Fight bacteria and fungi by engulfing them.
What do lymphocytes do?
Include B cells (produce antibodies), T cells (attack infected cells), and NK cells (kill cancer cells).
What do monocytes do?
Become macrophages that clean up dead cells and fight infections.
What do eosinophils do?
Attack parasites and play a role in allergies.
What do basophils do?
Release chemicals like histamine during allergic reactions, which cause sneezing, coughing and runny nose
Normal level of white blood cells is _____, while platelets is _____ and red blood cells is ______.
4 - 10 thousand
150 - 400 thousand
5 million
White blood cells are formed _____, red blood cells are formed _____, and platelets are formed ______,
All in bone marrow
Increased WBC count leads to ______, while decreased WBC count leads to _______.
Bacterial infection
Viral infection
Percentage of neutrophils and what a high number means
Normally see 40-60% Neutrophils
Increased # means bacterial infection
Or inflammation
Percentage of eosinophils and what a high number means
Normally see 2-8% Eosinophils
Increased # means parasitic infection or allergies
Percentage of basophils and what a high number means
Normally see 0-1% basophils
Increased # means increased chance of bleeding
Percentage of lymphocytes and what a high number means

Increased # means viral infection
Percentage of monocytes and what a high number means
Normally see 2-8% monocytes
Increased # means a chronic or
Subacute infection
What granules are in eosinophils? basophils?
Histamine and heparin
