Lab 11: Island Biogeography and Conversation Flashcards
biogeography
The study of the past and present geographic distribution of species.
taxon
A named taxonomic unit at any given level of classification.
dispersal
The movement of individuals or gametes away from their parent location. This movement sometimes expands the geographic range of a population or species.
competitive exclusion
The concept that when populations of two similar species compete for the same limited resources, one population will use the resources more efficiently and have a reproductive advantage that will eventually lead to the elimination of the other population.
What factors most influence species diversity on islands?
Island size
Distance of the island from the mainland
Who theorized on island biogeography?
Robert MacArthur and E.O. Wilson
Give the equation relating number of species to island area.
S = (C)(A^z)
where S= number of species A= area of the island C= the value of S at A=1 (i.e., y-intercept) z= slope
As area increases, the number of species
increases exponentially
Area Effect
Species richness increases (nonlinearly) with area available.
autecology
the ecological study of an individual organism, or sometimes a particular species.
archipelago
a group of islands
