Lab 1 - Terminology Flashcards
Abduction
Movement away from the midline; in the frontal plane and around a sagittal axis
Adduction
Movements towards midline
Flexion
A movement which decreases the angle between two parts. Flexion occurs along the sagittal plane and around a frontal axis
What is dorsiflexion
Raising toe toward the shin
What is plantar flexion
Pointing the toe
what is lateral flexion
For the trunk or neck
What is flexion of the thumb
Occurs in the frontal plane along a sagittal axis (opposite of the normal flexion)
What is extension
opposite movement to flexion - movement increases the angle between two parts
What is hyperextension?
Refers to movements beyond a normal range of motion
What is medial rotation
Towards midline, also called internal/ inward rotation
What is lateral rotation
Away from midline also called external/ outward rotation
What is supination?
Palms face anteriorly
What is pronation?
Palms face posteriorly
What is opposition?
of the thumb and any finger so that the pulp of each can be approximated
What is inversion?
Medial rotation and adduction of the forefoot (sole of the foot turns inward)
What is eversion?
Lateral rotation and abduction of the forefoot (sole of the foot turns outward)
What is circumduction?
Combination of flexion, abduction, extension, and adduction
What is elevation and depression?
- Elevation: body part upward
- Depression: body part downward
What is protraction and retraction?
- Protraction: Moving the body forward
- Retraction: Moving the body backwards
What is diaphysis?
the tubular shaft of a long bone
What is epiphysis?
The end portion of a long bone that has a separate ossification centre
What is tuberosity?
A rough projection
What is a tubercle?
A small rounded eminence
What is a trochanter?
A large, very prominent eminence
What is a process?
A bony prominence
What is articular surface?
A joint surface
What is a facet?
A small articular surface
What is a condyle?
A rounded articular surface
What is a epicondyle?
A non articular projection next to a condyle
What is an eminence?
A projection
What does osteo mean?
Bone
What is a head?
A large, rounded end of a bone?
What is a neck?
The part between the head and the diaphysis; usually separated into separate surgical and anatomical necks
What is a fossa?
A shallow depression
What is a foramen?
A round hole (a neurovascular opening)
What is a fissure?
A hole, shaped more like a crack or cleft
What is sulcus?
A long, narrow groove
