Lab 1: Scientific Method Flashcards
The six steps of the scientific method
- Observation
- Ask Question
- Hypothesis
- Prediction
- Test Prediction
- Support/Reject Hypothesis
A dataset described as descriptions rather than measurements.
Qualitative Data
A dataset described as recorded measurements, numerical
Quantitative Data
Define independent variable.
The factor the experimenter chooses to change in the experiment. IS NOT affected by any other variable. (x-Axis Variable)
Define dependent variable.
The factor that changes value as the independent variable is changed. (y-Axis Variable)
Standardized/Controlled Variable
Variables that the experimenter chooses to keep constant or standard in an experiment
Experimental Group
A group of samples that receive the experimental treatment or factor.
Control Group (Positive, Negative, and Blank)
A group of samples that is treated the same way as the experimental group but does not receive the treatment or factor.
Positive: A sample group that is known to produce positive results.
Negative: A sample group that is known to produce a negative result.
Blank: A negative control that does not receive any treatment.
TAILS Checklist for Graphs
Title, Axes, Intervals, Labels, Scale
A bar graph is used when…
One or both variables are qualitative.
A line graph is used when…
Both variables are quantitative.
