Lab 1 Flashcards
Effects of heparin?
prevents blood from coagulating by catalysing the thrombin-antithrombin reaction
What is the function of methanol fixation?
fix the smear and precipitate the proteins
Buffy coat, explain
White blood cells have lower density than red blood cells, and will fom a thin layer on the top after centrifugation
How to obtain blood serum
Centrifugate blood samle where fibrinogen is changed into fibrin by shaking flask containing small glass beads
Defibrilated blood
shake flask with blood and small glass beads to change fibrinogen into fibrin
What happens with the hematocrit level while increasing epinephrine level?
increase
Anticoagulants, give examples
Sodium citrate and Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic acid (EDTA)
Lee White method
tilt blood in tube in intervals for 3 min to see if it coagulates
Definition of hematocrit
Ratio of red blood cells to the total blood volume
Venous hematocrit larger than arterial, explain
because of ion transport and water flux associated with the CO2 transport
Increased eruthrocyte sedimentation rate
By displacing the albumin, the surface decrease
Describe the neutrophil granulocytes (mammals)
-nucleus: bean shaped (young), elongated (middleaged),
segmented (mature)
-light pink cytoplasm, different granules
-10qm diameter
-enzymes: lysozyme, myeloperoxidase
Describe heterophil granulocyte (birds)
- nucleus: several segments
- pink cytoplasm
- pale red granules
Describe eosinophil granulocyes
- nucleus: segmenter (unually bi-lobed)
- large bright red granules
- 14qm diameter
- Enzymes: histaminase, acid & alkalone phosphatase, eosinophil basic & cationic protein
Describe basophil granulocyte
- nucleus: hardly segmented
- large blur granules
- 15qm diameter
- enzymes: protease
