LAA1 - Modern technologies Flashcards
Define ad-hoc network
A type of wireless network where two devices can directly communicate with each other, instead of through a medium like a router or wireless access point.
3 benefits of ad-hoc networks
Scalable, flexible, limited setup
3 disadvantages of ad-hoc networks
Less secure, reduced speed, often no single device has overall control
3 ad-hoc networks
Personal Area Network (PAN), Open Wi-FI, Tethering or personal hotspot
What is a personal area network?
Multiple devices connect around a single individual to create a small network. Devices tyically use wi-fi or bluetooth, uses PINs.
What is open wi-fi?
Allows users to freely connect in public places, not encrypted.
What is tethering?
Connects a device with a network connection to one without, uses a wired tether (USB) or wi-fi to create a personal hotspot.
What are security issues with open networks?
Connections that do not require a username or password are insecure becuase they are not encrypted.
Define encryption
Process of scrambling data so that it cannot be understood without a translation key.
3 performance issues with ad-hoc networks
Poor signal, limited range, interupted data transfers
5 issues affecting network availability
rural vs city locations, developed vs developing countries, available infrastructure, blackspots, mobile network coverage
Define cloud storage
Where data is stored on remote servers and is accessed using the Internet.
4 features of cloud storage
Scalability, synchronisation, availability, setting and sharing of access rights
3 advantages of cloud storage
access data from any device that has an internet connection and web browser, scalable, data and its security managed by provider
3 disadvantages of cloud storage
cannot access data without an internet connection, additional storage space can be expensive, no control where and how data is stored
