LA - Operant Conditioning Flashcards
Define positive reinforcement
Giving something good in response to desired behaviour e.g a treat
Define negative reinforcement
Taking something bad away in response to desired behaviour e.g an unwanted situation
Define primary reinforcement
Satisfies a basic survival need such as hunger
Define secondary reinforcement.
Does not satisfy a basic need but allows to get an object that will satisfy a basic need such as money
Define punishment
Taking something or giving something as a result of undesired behaviour.
Define positive punishment
Giving someone something bad as a result of undesired behaviour eg shouting.
Define negative punishment
Taking something good as a result of undesired behaviour eg their phone.
Define behaviour shaping
To develop complex behaviours that would not be developed naturally.
Define fixed ration (FR) schedule.
Reinforcement takes place after a set number of times a behaviour has been displayed.
Define fixed interval (FI) schedule
Reinforcement takes place after a set amount of time, if the desired behaviour has been shown in that time.
Define variable ratio (VR) schedule
Reinforcement takes place unpredictably, there are no set responses for when the behaviour is reinforced.
Define variable interval (VI) schedule.
There are no set time intervals for when behaviour is reinforced. However, there will be an unpredictable average amount of time in which behaviour is reinforced.
Define reinforcement
Rewarding someone or something for desired behaviour
