L9 TENS and IFC Flashcards
Gate control theory of pain
sensory fiber stimulation closes the gate between A delta and C afferents at the spinal cord level
decreases pain, which deceases spasm, longer pain relief
Why does electricity help?
Gate control theory of pain
Endogenous opioid production and release
motor stimulation
wound healing
Motor stimulation
goal is to cause muscle activity to release endogenous opiate-like substances
try to increase inhibition
What waveform is TENS and IFC?
pulsed biphasic
Absolute contraindications of electricity
impaired cognition/communication
electronic device
Local contraindications of electricity
damaged skin
active tissue bleeding
epilepsy
impaired sensation
malignancy/pregnancy
TB
eyes/anterior neck
Precautions of electricity
impaired circulation
active epiphysis
infection
over chest/heart
Other safety thoughts electricity
has the pt had a bad experience?
don’t be in water
check machine
sensation changes as pressure changes
Indications of electricity
RA/OA
post surgical pain
DOMS
post mastectomy pain
neuropathy
Pad location for electricity
surrounding painful site
along nerve trunk area supplying painful site
ok to turn it off and try new spot
at least 2” apart, wider is deeper penetration
Chronic pain parameters
higher pulse duration and lower frequency
on and off for 30-60 min at a time
Acute pain parameters
lower pulse duration and higher frequency
can be on for hours at a time
Adding _____ to electrical stimulation has a _____ ______ effect
cryotherapy
greater long-term
IFC
focus on pain management
alternating current
frequencies are low to decrease impedance at skin
allows for deeper depth then TENS
Pre-modulated
almost the same as IFC, but frequency mixing occurs in the machine
better for smaller areas
