L4 Iontophoresis Flashcards
What is ionto?
transcutaneous delivery of drugs/compounds
active delivery
small amounts of direct current electrical charge can enhance permeation of compounds
dosage of ionto
current x time
typically 40 mA-min
higher currents can be more uncomfortable due to impendence & sensitivity
Contraindications of ionto
active thrombus
current bleeding
impaired circulation/sensation, cognition
pregnancy
malignancy
Precautions of ionto
obesity
diminished sensation
diabetes
metal implants
immature scar
Why should you not do ionto on new scar tissue?
due to risk of infection or dermatitis when the adhesive patch is left over a not yet healed incision or wound
Dexamethasone
Negative charge
inflammation, tendonitis, bursitis
Application of ionto
clean the skin, trim hair if needed
put meds on one patch, saline/water on other
skin should be hydrated
longer treatment is more comfortable and deliver more meds
Possible indications of ionto
acute inflammatory disorders
calcific conditions
pain
Factors most likely to influence how comfortable iontophoresis may feel to patient
electrical current
contract area of the treatment pad
amount of hair on the treatment area
What effect would you expect your pt to experience soon after ionto treatment with dexamethasone?
reduced pain with ADLs
ionto documentation
iontophoresis applied at 40mA for (time) with (volume of medication) (medication) to the (area of body) for (purpose) at (beginning, middle, end of treatment)
