L8 Laser Flashcards
Classification of lasers
Class 2 & 3B = used therapeutically
Class 4 = cauterize vessels
How does laser work?
laser energy is absorbed into tissue from light
lasers at certain wavelength appear to absorb into tissues better
triggers biologic changes at cellular level
What biologic changes at a cellular level occurs due to laser?
stimulate mitochondria to produce ATP
stimulate RNA for collagen synthesis
alter serotonin and endorphin metabolism
Benefits of laser
temporary relief of minor muscle and joint aches, pains/stiffness
reduction of muscle spasm
angiogenesis & neurovascularization
collagen synthesis
optimizing scar formation
speed recovery
Indications of laser
tendinopathy
ligament/muscle strains
osteoarthritis
diabetic neuropathy
radiation related neuropathy
wounds/ulcer
Contraindications of laser
active DVT
active bleeding
malignancy
pregnancy
Precautions of laser
epilepsy
impaired cognition
infection
anterior neck
Application of Laser
safety glasses must be worn
applicator is in contact with pts skin
keep it parallel
treat joints in open packed position
Evidence of laser
Good for: OA and athletics
mixed evidence for: tendinopathy
