L9: Assessment of Periodontal Diseases Flashcards
How do we assess periodontal health?
Gingival colour Gingival contour Pocket depth & gingival recession Bleeding on probing Tooth mobility Furcation involvement Radiographs
Describe healthy periodontal tissue
Pink Stippled No bleeding Little recession No mobility Pocket depth more than 3
Chronic gingivitis characteristics
Inflammation of gingivae (due to presence of bacterial plaque)
Slow onset
Usually painless
Periodontal pocket
Due to alveolar bone loss; the gums recede, or come loose from the tooth
What is the BPE probe used for?
Identify periodontitis
Probe is inserted into the gingival crevice and used to ‘walk aroud’ the tooth
A score out of 4 is given depending on how much of the black bands are visible.

Benefits of BPE
Simple and quick
Good indication of treatment required
Disadvantages of BPE
Not designed to monitor patients (a full charting is required)
No distinction between true/false charting
Lack of detail between sextants
No detail of recession
No detail of furcation involvement
Often misused
What is 6PPC?
When and how is it used?
6 point pocket chart
When a full periodontal assessment is required
Use the same walking technique as BPE
USE WILLIAMS or unc15
