L7. THE GEOLOGIC TIME SCALE Flashcards
It is a record of fossils and geologic events of the earth made from the study of earth’s layer of rocks using relative and absolute dating.
Geologic Time Scale
It is a unit in geologic time that includes two or more periods.
Era
It is a unit of geologic time that is longer than epoch but shorter than an era.
Period
It is the subdivision of geologic time that is longer than age but shorter than a period. It is the fourth largest division in geologic time.
Epoch
It shows history of environmental change and history of changing organisms.
The Geologic Time
It happens when a population of a species goes extinct.
Mass Extinction
It is the most recent eon in the Earth’s history. It is the eon in which we live.
Phanerozoic
This era is the age of “ancient life”; it started more than 540 million years ago and lasted for more than 300 million years.
Paleozoic Era
The massive extinctions triggered by shifts in ocean currents marks the end of this era.
Paleozoic Era
The era of “middle life”; the age of reptiles which started at around 245 million years and ended for 180 million years.
Mesozoic Era
This era is subdivided into three period: Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods.
Mesozoic Era
The end of this era was also marked by mass extinction caused by global cooling after meteorites impact the earth.
Mesozoic Era
This era is subdivided into Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous, and Permian geologic periods.
Paleozoic Era
This is the era of “recent life”; the age of mammals which began 65 million years ago and continues up to the present.
Cenozoic Era
This era was divided into Paleogene, Neogene, and Quaternary periods
