L6 leukocytes and leukopoiesis Flashcards
what are the only formed elements that are true cells ?
WBCs
what are the 2 ways WBCs defend the body against foreign organisms >?
phagocytosis and production of antibodies
what cells are responsible for tissue rejection ?
T-lymphocytes
where do all leukocytes originate ?
all leukocytes originate from pluripotent hematopoietic stem cell that differentiate into myeloid stem cell and lymphoid stem cell
what differentiates further from the myeloid and lymphoid stem cells ?
lymphoid stem cells differentiate into lymphocytes while myeloid stem cells differentiate into neutrophils , eosinophils , basophils and monocytes
how are B and T lymphocytes formed ?
hematopoietic stem cells differentiate into lymphoid stem cells . these cells either produce B lymphocytes that mature into plasma cells in peripheral lymphoid tissue ultimatly producing anti bodies , OR they go to the thymus gland where they are matured into T-lymphocytes which are activated in the peripheral lymphoid tissue
what is the difference between leukopenia , leukocytosis , and leukemia??
leukopenia is decreased number of WBCS
LEUKOCYTOSIS IS A MILD INCREASE IN NUMBER WITH INFECTION
Leukemia is malignant increase in number of WBCs
