Q

What is the aerobic respiration?

A

This is a chemical reaction which uses glucose (from food) and oxygen (that we breathe in) to release energy.

Q

What happens in a faster rate of respiration to your body?

A

The body needs more oxygen, breathing rate increases, heart rate increases, body makes more carbon dioxide.

Q

What happens to the body during hard exercise?

A

It can’t gain all of the energy needed through aerobic respiration so anaerobic respiration happens too.

Q

What is anaerobic respiration?

A

This is releasing energy without oxygen. It releases less energy per glucose molecule but releases the energy quicker. In anaerobic respiration, the glucose is only partially broken down, lactic acid is produced which builds up in the muscles making them fatigued and painful.

Q

What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?

A

Glucose = lactic acid (a toxic chemical. Body can withstand a small amount for a short time) + release of energy (much less energy is released than in aerobic respiration).

Q

Why does you breathing and heart rate remain rapid after an intense exercise?

A

Because anaerobic respiration leaves you with an oxygen debt; your body did a form of respiration without oxygen, leaving lactic acid; lactic acid is harmful to cells so it has to be removed and the only way to do that is by breathing in extra oxygen to react with the lactic acid and remove it from the cell.
