L1: Cell structure and specialised cells. Flashcards
What is the shape of a plant cell?
It appears to be like a block or a cube.
What is the shape of an animal cell?
It appears to be round but irregular (not exactly as round as and oval or a sphere
What is the structural organisation of organisms (ascending order)?
Organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism.
What are the life processes?
Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition.
What is respiration?
Releasing energy.
How would you describe a cell?
They are the building blocks of life - they come in all shapes and sizes. Cells are not flat; they are three dimensional.
How would you describe an organism made up of only one cell?
They are unicellular.
How would you describe and organism made up of many different types of cells?
They are multicellular.
Can you name three different types of unicellular organisms?
Bacteria, viruses, yeast.
Can you name three different types of multicellular organisms?
Humans, donkeys, cows.
Plant cells and animal cells both have 3 similar features: the nucleus, the cytoplasm, the cell membrane. Why do plant cells have extra, different organelles to animal cells?
They both have different needs; (e.g.) plant cells have chloroplasts and animal cells don’t because animal cells don’t need to perform photosynthesis as animal organisms simply consume their nutrients through their mouths but plant organisms need to transform water, sunlight and carbon dioxide into oxygen and carbohydrates (sugars).
