L5- Pressure on the coast Flashcards
What is the definition of a direct effect?
It is where human activity has an unmediated effect on it
Give an example of a direct effect
For example the building of groynes may interrupt the process of longshore drift changing the shape of the beach and therefore the location of the groynes
What is the definition of an indirect effect?
It is when human activity effects something and the goes on to affect a part of the coastline
Give an example of an indirect effect
Due to the rising cost of farm land farmers are more inclined to use fertilisers which will then run off to coastal waters affecting the nutrient mix and habitat having an effect on marine food webs
What is longshore drift?
It carries sand along the shore until it reaches a river estuary when it gets pushed out in the river channel and halts the rift so sand is deposited and this forms a spit.
Name some ways that plants on a beach are strong
1) Longs roots to hold them in place
2) tough waxy leaves to stop them getting sandblasted
3) they can survive being sprayed by salt water
Name some human activities that have a negative impact on the coastline
- The construction of coastal settlements
- The construction of industries
( These are direct effects)
There are many different types of human activity, can you name all four categories?
Development, agriculture, industry and coastal management
Explain how action and activities in one place can have indirect and direct impacts on the coastline?
This is because the coastline is naturally interconnected
What factors affect the impact of damaging the coastline
Where it is done and what is done
