L1 - Nature's Fury Flashcards
In Cornwall, what do the prevailing south-westerly winds bring?
Low pressure storms and big waves
How long is Cornwall’s coastline?
Over 400 miles
What sort of beaches do constructive waves form in comparison to destructive waves?
Constructive waves form wide shallow beaches whereas destructive waves form narrow, steep beaches and deposit offshore to form a bar
What season are constructive waves typically found in?
Summer
What season are destructive waves typically found in?
Winter
Which type of wave has around 6-9 wave crests per minute (has a low frequency)?
Constructive waves. Destructive waves have high frequencies at 11-15 crests per minute
Do destructive waves result in erosion or deposition?
Destructive waves encourage erosion due to their stronger backwash
Do constructive waves have a stronger swash or backwash?
Their swash is stronger which is why they deposit sediment
Which wave creates a beach berm?
Constructive waves- destructive waves create offshore bars.
What do larger pressure differences in the Atlantic result in?
More depressions passing over the UK which means that there’s more destructive wave action and as a result, more erosion.
